A Brief History of Colorado State Cup

The origins of the National Championship Series can be traced back to 1935, when the first tournament was held to crown national champions in the Boys U19 age group. When USYS began operating the National Championship Series in 1975 76, they added the Boys U16 age group, which was followed by the addition of the Girls U19 and U16 age groups in 1980 and 1985, respectively.

Over the course of the 1990’s and 2000’s, other age groups began to fill in on the Boys and Girls sides, with the U17s (1991), U18s (1994), U14s (2001), U15s (2001), and U13s (2013) being added.

Colorado Soccer Association ran the first state cup in 1975-76, shortly after becoming members of US Youth Soccer. Since then, the tournament has been run annually, determining the state champions that would represent the state at Far West Regionals. The winners at the regional tournament would represent the region and state at the National Championship, with the ultimate goal being to win there to be declared National Champions for their age group!

Twelve Colorado teams have won the USYS National Championship Series to be declared National Champions:

  • BU17 Northglenn Thunder (1990-1991 series)

  • GU17 Colorado Rush (1997-1998 series)
